Cultural Heritage
Xiaoyao Tower Ruins date back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907), originally serving as the eastern gate of Guizhou City. What makes it special? A stone tablet inscribed with “Xiaoyao Lou” by Yan Zhenqing, a legendary Chinese calligrapher. Though Yan never visited Guilin, his style was recreated here, reflecting his bold, powerful handwriting. Later, in 1102, the site was renamed Xiangnan Tower by local officials, and a carved inscription details this transformation. Today, visitors can still see the tablet’s reverse side, which holds a centuries-old record of these changes.
