Location & Transportation
Expo Houtan Wetland Park sits along the Huangpu River in Pudong, Shanghai, right next to the former World Expo site. To get there, take Metro Line 13 and hop off at Houtan Road Station—it’s a short walk from exit 3. If you’re coming by bike, there’s a dedicated path along Shibo Avenue (2200号). Buses 82 or 83 also drop you nearby. The park’s easy to spot: look for the tall reeds and river views!
Natural Scenery: A Riverside Oasis
This place is a hidden gem for nature lovers. The wetland spans over 140 hectares, with winding paths that take you through reed-filled marshes and open grasslands. In spring, pink lotus flowers bloom, and migratory birds like herons and egrets stop by—bring binoculars if you’re into birdwatching! The river smells fresh, especially in the morning, and the sunset here is incredible—golden light reflecting on the water.
Cultural Touches: Art Meets Ecology
Don’t expect museums, but there’s still culture here. The park was built on the site of the 2010 World Expo, so you’ll see leftover sculptures like the “Cloud Gate” (a giant shiny loop) repurposed into art installations. There’s also a bridge made of recycled materials and info boards explaining the wetland’s ecosystem. It’s a cool mix of nature and human creativity!
Facilities: Relax, Don’t Rush
The park is super family-friendly. Paved walkways make it stroller-friendly, and there’s a play area for kids with swings and climbing structures. For adults, there are shaded pavilions to escape the sun, and a small café near the entrance selling coffee and snacks. Pro tip: Bring a picnic! There are grassy spots with amazing river views. Bathrooms are clean, and there’s free Wi-Fi in some zones.
The Experience: Slow Down
Visiting Expo Houtan feels like escaping the city’s hustle. Walk along the riverfront promenade, listen to birds chirping, and watch ships glide by. On weekends, locals fly kites or practice tai chi—it’s a peek into Shanghai’s slower side. Come early to beat the heat, or late afternoon for softer light. Wear comfy shoes—there’s a lot to explore, but no rush.
Free entry, open daily 7 AM–9 PM. Perfect for a half-day trip paired with nearby Expo parks or a river cruise!
