Shen Xiang Temple, also known as the “Civun Chansi,” is a unique monastery for Buddhist nuns located at 338 Fuyuan Shopping Mall F1, Fuyu Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai. It covers an area of 2378 mu and houses various halls such as the Heavenly King Hall, the Main Hall, the Kwan-yin Pavilion, the Garland Pavilion, and the Memorial Hall of Yingzhe Master. The temple is famous for its offering of a statue of Kwan-yin made from Haiqiong Water Agarwood donated by Hong Kong believers. The entrance features a three-storied archway with the name “Shen Xiang Temple” inscribed by Sha Menghai. The Maitreya Bodhisatva in the Heavenly King Hall is depicted with a distinctive posture, different from the usual jovial figure. The Main Hall showcases the “Hua Yan San Sheng,” including the Luoshina Buddha flanked by Manjusri and Samantabhadra. The Kwan-yin Pavilion houses a valuable statue of Kwan-yin, attracting continuous devotion. This temple, alongside Longhua, Jing'an, and Yufo Monasteries, was listed as one of the first 142 key open monasteries by the State Council in 1988. Despite the changes over time, the temple remains a spiritual treasure with its rich history and cultural significance.
