History & Culture
This town dates back to the Song Dynasty, originally a small village. Its heart is Yan Family Mansion, a grand estate built by a wealthy landowner. Later, the family’s descendant (and founder of Chongqing’s Taoranja Restaurant) rebuilt the mansion and revived the old street, naming it “Tao Ran” (meaning “peaceful” in Chinese). Today, it’s a national AAAA-rated attraction and part of Chongqing’s “New Twelve Views of Ba-Yu,” blending Bashu culture, religious traditions, and folk customs.
