Location & Transportation

Longtan Lake sits in Jiangjin District, Chongqing, near the border of Simian Mountain Town. To get there, set your GPS to the intersection of 315 Rural Road and 343 County Road, then head northwest for about 100 meters. It’s easiest to visit by car—scenic but narrow roads mean you’ll want to drive slowly to catch all the views. If you’re coming from downtown Chongqing, expect a 2-hour drive through winding mountains.

Natural Landscape

Longtan Lake is a 3,000-meter-long natural lake, flanked by Simian Town to the left and towering Huaping Mountain to the right. The lake’s edges are lined with four jagged peaks that rise like giants into the clouds. From afar, these peaks look like a traditional Chinese painting of the “Four Gentlemen”—plup, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum—hence the nickname Huaping Mountain (“Painted Screen Mountain”). On clear days, mist wraps around the mountains, making them look like watercolor strokes.

The lake itself is clean and cool, fed by nine rivers and seven waterfalls. Its water is so pure you can see fish swimming below. In summer, lotus flowers bloom on the surface, adding splashes of pink and white. Keep an eye out for mating ducks—they often swim alongside boats, as if greeting visitors!

Cultural Highlights

One of Longtan Lake’s most iconic spots is the Longtan Su Bridge, a wooden rope bridge that sways gently over the water. Standing here, you’ll feel like you’re part of a poem: “A dragon dances on the waves, half the lake glistens green. The breeze carries shadows, sunset hugs the mountains.” Even if you don’t get the full poetic vibe, the view is worth it—especially at sunrise or sunset.

Locals say the lake’s name, Longtan (“Dragon’s Pool”), comes from its shape: winding like a dragon. Whether you believe the legend or not, the scenery feels magical.

Amenities

You can rent rowboats or paddle boats at docks along the lake. Prices are affordable (around 50-100 yuan per hour), and staff will give you a safety briefing. There are also small stalls selling snacks, cold drinks, and souvenirs. If you want to swim, go early—the water is refreshing but can get crowded later in the day.

For food, try the local hotpot or grilled fish at nearby lakeside restaurants. Some places even let you catch your own fish fresh from Longtan Lake!

Visiting Experience

At Longtan Lake, start with a boat ride. As you glide across the water, you’ll pass cascading waterfalls and see mountains covered in lush green. On a hot day, the breeze feels like a natural fan! Stop mid-lake to take photos of the four peaks—they look especially stunning when framed by the water.

Don’t miss the Su Bridge. Walking across it might feel a little wobbly, but the view of the lake and mountains from the middle
