What it is
The Beishan (North Mountain) rock carvings are one of the two main components of the Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in Dazu District, Chongqing. Centred on the Dafowan valley, the grottoes span several dynasties and are prized for their delicate, refined carving and Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian subject matter. They are known as the artistic/technical counterpoint to the larger Baodingshan site ('北山看门道,宝顶看热闹').
Why it's worth the stop
- UNESCO World Cultural Heritage rock carvings
- Exquisitely detailed, multi-dynasty Buddhist cave sculpture
- Quieter than Baodingshan — ideal for slow, close-up viewing
Getting there
No metro; take intercity rail/bus to Dazu, then a local bus (Dazu has shuttle connections between the bus station and Baodingshan/Beishan), or taxi.
