Beijing to Xi'an by High-Speed Rail (2026)
Why the train beats flying here
Xi'an Xianyang Airport (XIY) is a long transfer northwest of the city walls. Beijing West to Xi'an North drops you on Metro Line 2, about 30 minutes from the Bell Tower. Door-to-door, a 4.5-hour G-train is usually faster than a 2-hour flight once you add airport queues. Punctuality on this corridor is excellent outside Golden Week.
| Factor | High-speed rail | Flight |
|---|---|---|
| In-vehicle time | ~4h 10m–6h | ~2h |
| Door-to-door | ~5.5–7h including station time | ~6–8h including airports |
| Arrival | Xi'an North, metro into the walls | Xianyang Airport, bus/metro/taxi in |
| Typical second-class / economy | 515–580 CNY | Often similar or higher in peak weeks |
Stations (get this right)
- Beijing West (北京西站) — main high-speed departure for Xi'an. Metro Lines 7 and 9. Arrive 45–60 minutes early; this is a huge station.
- Xi'an North (西安北站) — the high-speed arrival. Metro Line 2 south to the Bell Tower / Muslim Quarter. Do not confuse with Xi'an Station (西安站), the older downtown station used by many overnight sleepers.
- A handful of trains also use other Beijing terminals. Read the ticket: Beijing West is the default you want.
Seat classes and fares
| Class | Typical range¹ | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Second | 470–580 CNY | 2+3 seating, sockets, the seat almost everyone books |
| First | 749–825 CNY | 2+2, quieter, more bag space |
| Business | 1,460–1,830 CNY | Lie-flat pods; a splurge on a 4–5 hour daytime ride |
¹ Published / typical 12306 ranges for G-trains Beijing West → Xi'an North, August 2026. China Railway uses floating fares. Confirm on 12306 or Trip.com for your train number.
Honest verdict: second class is fine. Save the upgrade for the longer Beijing–Shanghai run or if you need to work.
Onboard reality
- Scenery: North China farmland, then the approach to the Wei River plain. This is not the Qinling mountain show — that is the Xi'an–Chengdu line.
- Food: trolley plus a dining car; rice boxes about 40–60 CNY. Bring snacks.
- Wi-Fi: often needs a mainland number. Use a travel eSIM.
- Luggage: overhead + end-of-car racks. Board with the same passport you booked.
Booking
- English: Trip.com. Official: 12306 (passport registration, sometimes a wait for verification).
- Tickets typically release about 15 days ahead. Friday and Sunday afternoon G-trains sell first.
- Scan your passport at the gate. No paper ticket if the booking is linked correctly.

Better than a nonstop: stop in the middle
- Luoyang Longmen (洛阳龙门) — Longmen Grottoes, 1.5 hours from Xi'an, also reachable from Beijing on some G-trains via Zhengzhou.
- Zhengzhou East — the crossroads if you are adding Shaolin or the Henan Museum.
Overnight Z/T sleepers still run into old Xi'an Station. Useful if you want a hotel night of sleep instead of a hotel night in Beijing — not faster, just a different rhythm.
FAQ
How long is the Beijing to Xi'an high-speed train?
Most G-trains take about 4 hours 10 minutes to 6 hours. The fastest daytime services are around 4 hours 10–20 minutes.
Which stations should I use?
Book Beijing West (北京西站) to Xi'an North (西安北站). Do not default to Beijing South (that is the Shanghai corridor) or old Xi'an Station unless you are on an overnight sleeper.
Is second class enough for 4–5 hours?
Yes for most travelers. Upgrade to first class if you are tall, working, or carrying two large bags.
Should I fly or take the train?
The train usually wins door-to-door. Xi'an Xianyang Airport sits northwest of the city; the high-speed station has Metro Line 2 into the Bell Tower area.
Can I stop in Luoyang or Zhengzhou?
Yes. Many G-trains call at Zhengzhou East and some at Luoyang Longmen. Split the trip if you want the Longmen Grottoes.
