Xi'an to Chengdu by High-Speed Rail (2026)
Why this line exists
Until 2017 the rail option around the Qinling mountains was an 11-hour slog. The high-speed line bores through the range. You trade a short flight into Chengdu Tianfu (itself a long transfer) for a station-to-station trip that lands at Chengdu East, on the metro, closer to most hotels than Tianfu Airport.
| Factor | High-speed rail | Flight |
|---|---|---|
| In-vehicle | ~3–4h | ~1.5–2h |
| Door-to-door | ~4–5.5h | Often similar once Tianfu/Xianyang transfers are counted |
| Frequency | Dozens of G/D trains a day | Fewer useful banks of flights |
| Second class / economy | 263–300 CNY typical | Often higher unless you hunt sales |
Stations
- Xi'an North (西安北站) — same station you arrived at from Beijing. Metro Line 2.
- Chengdu East (成都东站) — the high-speed arrival. Metro Lines 2 and 7. Pandas are a metro + bus or Didi from here; do not try to squeeze the panda base into the same afternoon you arrive unless the train is early.
- Some D-trains use other Chengdu terminals. Read the ticket.
Fares
| Class | Typical range¹ | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Second | 263–300 CNY | Yes — this is the default |
| First | 421–481 CNY | Nice for the mountain windows |
| Business | 789–940 CNY | A treat, not a need, on a 3-hour daytime run |
¹ Typical 12306 ranges for G-trains Xi'an North → Chengdu East, August 2026. Floating fares — confirm on 12306 or Trip.com.
What you actually see
The marketing line is “China’s most scenic high-speed railway.” The honest line: tunnels, then a burst of ridge and viaduct, then tunnels again. Sit by the window anyway. The Qinling is why pandas and Terracotta Warriors sit in different climate worlds — you are crossing that divide at 250 km/h.
- Snack trolley and dining car as on other G/D trains.
- Power at seats; eSIM for data (onboard Wi-Fi is unreliable without a mainland number).
- Book the Beijing–Xi'an leg and this one as soon as the 15-day window opens if you travel in October Golden Week.
After you arrive
- People's Park teahouse the same evening if you land before dusk.
- Panda base the next morning at opening — they nap by late morning.
- Hotpot: Chongqing-style mala is a different city; Chengdu hotpot is still Sichuan, slightly gentler. Either way, Alipay or WeChat at the table.
Next corridor if you keep going south-east: Chengdu to Chongqing in about 1.5 hours.
FAQ
How long is the Xi'an to Chengdu high-speed train?
Most G and D trains take about 3 to 4 hours. The fastest services are around 3 hours 7–13 minutes.
Which stations?
Xi'an North (西安北站) to Chengdu East (成都东站). Chengdu East is the high-speed hub; metro into the city. Do not book Chengdu Station (成都站) unless your ticket says so.
Is the ride scenic?
In bursts. The line tunnels through the Qinling range, so you get viaducts and mountain cuts mixed with long dark stretches. Sit by a window; do not expect a continuous alpine panorama.
Second class or first?
Second class is enough for three hours. First class is a reasonable treat if you want a quieter window for the mountain sections.
Is there still an overnight train?
Yes, slower D/K options exist, 11-plus hours. For this hop the daytime high-speed train is the default.
