What first class actually is
On most G-trains the three daytime classes are:

There is no champagne service. Trolley food is the same. Wi-Fi still often wants a mainland number — use a travel eSIM. The upgrade is space and noise, not a different network.

When first class is worth it
- Rides of four hours or more if you are over about 185 cm, need a laptop table that is not elbow-to-elbow, or have two large suitcases.
- Sold-out second class on a train you must catch. First often has leftover seats.
- Not worth it: Suzhou, Hangzhou, or Nanjing day trips under two hours. Pay for a better lunch instead.
Business class is a different product — lie-flat pods on the flagship sets. Nice on Beijing–Shanghai; hard to justify versus a hotel night on shorter legs. See also how to book tickets.
How to choose the seat
- Window vs aisle is the real choice. Window A/F-style letters vary by consist; pick the diagram in Trip.com or 12306.
- Cars are numbered. First-class cars are usually nearer the locomotive or in a dedicated block — follow the overhead screens, not a guess.
- Board with the same passport you booked. No paper ticket if the booking is linked.

Is China high-speed first class like airplane first class?
No. It is a wider 2+2 seat in a quieter car. Same trolley food, same network. Think European first class on a fast train, not a lie-flat jet.
How much more does first class cost?
Typically about 1.6 to 1.8 times second class. On Beijing–Shanghai that is often around 930–1,076 CNY versus 553–662 CNY. Confirm the live pair on 12306 or Trip.com.
Is second class uncomfortable?
No for most travelers. 2+3 seating with sockets. Upgrade if you are tall, working, or carrying two large bags on a 4-plus hour ride.
Does business class include a lounge?
Some large stations have a business-class waiting area. On board you get a pod, not a different railway. Check the station screens; do not assume every terminal has a lounge.
Can I upgrade after I buy second class?
Sometimes at the station or in the app if first class still has seats, with a fare difference. Do not count on it at 15 minutes before departure.
